![]() Then we walk Wilson away so he can’t see where McConaughey is taken and then we use a particular leash to tie him up and let him do his trailing thing. Then as we go over his training with him a couple times a month, we bring out the ball and let McConaughey dangle it in front of Wilson. That way Wilson’s motivator is directly linked – and only linked – to McConaughey and his scent. In a nutshell, it basically works like this… nobody is allowed to play ball with Wilson except for McConaughey. And nothing could distract him from getting that ball. ![]() Nobody could persuade him to exchange it for anything or anyone else. When that ball is presented to him, he gets so excited to get that thing that nothing is gonna stop him. And, cool side note, oddly enough “Wilson” is a brand of tennis balls. Actually it’s pretty much any ball, but a tennis ball was his first discovery. That’s Wilson when it comes to tennis balls. You could not distract or detour that dog from virtually anything if that laser light was showing. My parents used to have a dog who’s motivator was a laser light. It’s just kinda his thing – which just happens to be, of all things … a tennis ball. That thing that gets his juices flowin’ and gets him laser focused on just having to have it. You know, that thing that just gets him super excited. Wilson, like anybody else, has his motivator. Something we hope we never have to use, but it’s a stressor that has been lessened knowing that we have this ability. ![]() On our last training day with Wilson, our son’s autism service dog, we learned how to trail (track down) McConaughey with Wilson when he goes missing.
